People told me I’d still feel you around. Truthfully, it’s been hard to find you at all. Only in painting you and listening to your favorite songs did I start to feel you again. And, now, I’ll always have you here; your spirit almost alive on canvas. I miss you everyday, but here in this paint, you don’t seem so far away anymore.

In her song “The Mother,” Brandi Carlile talks about how she gets to see the world a second time through the eyes of her daughter. That’s what came to mind when Andrew Gulledge showed me his image from which this composition was taken. There is something peaceful about this father showing London to his young son as the world chaotically shifts around them.

Many know Grace Lee Boggs as an activist, author, and philosopher, being one of the key influencers of the civil rights movement. She has a book and documentary that was featured on Netflix; many have been inspired by her life. BUT, I know Grace as my grandfather’s sister and the spunky 100 year-old who requested candy instead of real meals in her final days. She was the perfect combination of tough yet compassionate and wise yet full of youthful energy, qualities represented by the blurred hawthorn tree blooms in the background. I’ll remember her for being stubborn like my grandfather but mostly for her ability to see straight to the core of anyone brave enough to look her in the eye.
